Meet the Speakers

  • Carolyn Kousky

    ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ECONOMICS AND POLICY AT ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND

    Dr. Kousky’s research examines multiple aspects of climate risk management and policy approaches for increasing resilience. She is the author of Understanding Disaster Insurance: New Tools for a More Resilient Future and an editor of A Blueprint for Coastal Adaptation. She is the vice-chair of the California Climate Insurance Working Group, a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance at the U.S. Department of Treasury, a non-resident senior fellow in the Brookings Metro program, a university fellow at Resources for the Future, a non-resident scholar at the Insurance Information Institute, and a member of the Roundtable on Risk and Resilience of Extreme Events at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. She was previously Executive Director at the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania. She has a BS in Earth Systems from Stanford University and a PhD in Public Policy from Harvard University.

  • Helen Wiley

    DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PROGRAM DIRECTOR AT SBP

    SBP is a national disaster recovery and resilience nonprofit. Helen most recently worked at the Wharton Risk Center at the University of Pennsylvania as Assistant Director of Research and Policy. She has also worked on international climate and disaster risk reduction projects at the German Development Institute (DIE) and at the Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). Helen holds a B.A. in Environmental Policy from Washington University in St. Louis; her M.Sc. in Geography of Environmental Risks and Human Security was administered jointly by the United Nations University and the University of Bonn, Germany.

    Steve is an executive in the dynamic Insurance Technology space and has held leadership positions serving the insurance industry for the past 25+ years. A sales and marketing person by training,entrepreneur at heart and executive manager by accident, Steve has been building and running sales and marketing engines his entire career. Steve has a strong track record of developing GTM strategies, launching new products and entering new markets covering over 35 software products in 50 countries while creating significant revenue and enterprise value across four separate companies. Steve is an active InnSure Board member and is currently championing InnSure’s working group for Community Embedded Insurance for Climate Resiliency.

    Unique mix of experiences over 35+ years including corporate insurance P&C carrier leadership, serial entrepreneurship and not-for-profit board and C-level executive roles. Highly interested in the intersection of where insurance, technology and public and private stakeholders can collectively catalyze a bold insurance industry response to climate risk. Mission-driven with the goal to create better insurance products that will 1) reduce the insurance protection gap, 2) accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy, 3) Incentivize investments in community resilience and/or 4) help policyholders implement nature-positive practices.
